Universal Remote to be replaced by smart phone?

I read that in a New York Times article, it was also linked to on Slashdot.org, here http://tinyurl.com/chm298 .  The argument is that there are too many gadgets in todays home that require remotes for a single universal remote to keep up.  The only hope it seems is a cell phone with a proper operating system [...]
